Lake Seminole
A Major Part of the Bainbridge Georgia Community
Lake Seminole, offering waterfront homes, is a favorite place to live in the Bainbridge area. Few places offer the serenity, beauty, and recreational facilities that Lake Seminole lakefront living has to offer. Contact Larry Lennard to see any of the available Lake Seminole real estate properties.
A few of the major reasons people have been taken with the Lake Seminole area is because of the storied history and amazingly temperate climate. The area benefits from the variety of four seasons, without the harsh cold of Northern winters or the dripping sultry heat of South Florida summers.
The Flint River, the Chattahoochee River, Spring Creek, and Fish Pond Drain are the bodies of water that feed into lake Seminole. Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam and Hydroelectric Power Station control lake water levels. Seminole State Park offers camping, cottages, group shelters, and other recreational facilities. Decatur County homes are right on the lake that provides some of the best bass fishing in the world and provides a quiet kind of “get-away” place to hunt, fish and generally relax.
You don’t have to be a hunter or a fisherman to enjoy Lake Seminole’s natural beauty and treasures. Bainbridge, Georgia residents from all walks of life enjoy the lake. Check out the various activities the lake has to offer…
Seminole State Park
Fishing
Lake Seminole’s waters are teeming with aquatic vegetation, cypress ponds and lime sinks and springs. The lake is nationally renowned as one of the best sites for sports fishing in the United States. Extensive grass beds and stump beds give great cover where fishermen hunt for scrappy hybrid, striped and white bass along with the lunker largemouth. Big populations of catfish, bream and crappie along with nearly 80 other species of fish have been identified in the lake.
If you would rather fish from the shoreline, bank fishing is fantastic at many locations in the Decatur County area. Fishing decks, bridges, flowing creek beds that flow into lakes are all filled with fish. If you’re looking for good downstream fishing opportunities check out the Jim Woodruff Dam.
The land surrounding the lake includes 24,000 acres of wildlife management area and Seminole State Park.
Other opportunities in the area for excellent fishing can be found on the rivers and at the Earle May Boat Basin Park, which has been the site for five BASSmaster Classic fishing tournaments. Check out the Lake Seminole Bass Fishing or book a Lake Seminole bass guide if you’re ready to go.
Camping
Camping is a favorite recreational activity at Lake Seminole. The different campsites in the area offer differing amenities. You have a wide variety of choices if you want to visit the lake for a night, a few nights or a few weeks. There are 50 campsites and 14 waterfront cottages.
Hales Landing, operated by the Corp of Engineers, is located very close to Bainbridge. Several boat ramps maintained and operated by the Corp of Engineers are open to the public.
Nature Trails
There are plenty of options on land as well as on water in the Bainbridge/Lake Seminole area. Hiking in Seminole State Park can be done on your own or with one of the park’s expert tour guides. The 2.2 mile nature trail finds many visitors taking guided tours to find out about the special ecosystem. Georgia’s state reptile, the gopher tortoise, is sometimes seen wandering about the pathways.
Bird watching is also a popular pastime because of the many Neotropical birds and eagles that live within the wildlife management perimeter.
Hunting
Deer, turkey and duck seasons draw hunters to the Lake Seminole area at various times of the year. Quail and dove are also abundant in the area.
Climate
The land and water we can see today at Lake Seminole is the result of millions of year of deposits, erosion and uplift coming together with man’s creation of the lake. A year round moderate climate and sandy acid soils support a distinctive coastal plain flora with pines, oaks, gums and cypress. The variety of flora brings forth an abundance of mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird and fish species.
