In Bainbridge, our schools from pre-kindergarten through high school, are on the road from good to great! The mission of the Decatur County School System is to strive for excellence in meeting the needs of each learner and inspiring lifelong learning by maximizing the use of available resources.

Numerous new and innovative teaching approaches have been implemented, and success is already being achieved as test scores in the Bainbridge schools and all of Decatur County continue to climb. As a community, the citizens of Bainbridge realize that the responsibility of creating an atmosphere of success is up to the community itself, and the dividends of committing to superior education pay off when young adults successfully enter the work force.

Once students graduate High School, they have the option of attending Bainbridge College, founded in 1973, a two-year college that is part of the University system of Georgia. Bainbridge College offers both technical career certificates and academic transfer degrees.

Through continuing efforts in stressing the importance that education plays in Decatur County, the Chamber of Commerce is actively involved in supporting partnerships linking local businesses with schools. As a result of these efforts many partnerships have been developed that help prepare and improve our students as they get ready for their post-graduate life through education.

  • Decatur County Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Project Updraft
  • New beginnings Learning Center
  • Tech Prep Program

In 1997, the voters of Decatur County approved an Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST). EPLOST is an optional 1% sales tax that is used exclusively for educational capital improvements. The money provides funding for such items as new school buildings, upgrades to existing facilities, and implementation of new technology. Voters have approved continuation of the EPLOST twice. The citizens of Decatur County have spoken about their valuing the importance of education in the community.

Education Goals

The Decatur County School System goals are to improve academic achievement and provide modern, efficient, safe, and clean facilities for all school activities. Other goals include increasing parental and community involvement in the educational process, creating an effective school climate conducive to teaching and learning and to provide safe and disciplined schools.

Technology

Current technology is used through physical integration directly into classrooms in Bainbridge. Teaching methods and curriculum are constantly restructured to incorporate new technologies as they become available. Every elementary school in Decatur County is set up with student workstations and teacher workstations. In middle and high schools, a combination of individual student workstations and computer labs are used and include monitored Internet access.

Recent Recognitions

The Decatur County Schools received several recognitions recently. Seven of the nine area principals were listed as "high performing" and 8 of 9 schools made APY in 2005-06.

Only five Georgia schools received recognition with the Bill Daggett "Promising Schools Project" and one of them was in Decatur County. The county received the National Governor's Association AP Expansion Grant and 8 of 9 schools were classified as Title I schools for 2006-07.

The county received a certificate for Most Improvement for reducing the Gap between students with disabilities and their general education peers. Three schools also received Bronze or Gold State Accountability Awards (SSAS).

Partnerships

The county partners with many members of t he community including the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers (GYSTC), Family Trust Decatur County Schools Foundation, Performance Learning Center (PLC), Communities in Schools and the City and County Government School Initiative.

Grace Christian Academy

Another important academic institution in Bainbridge is the Grace Christian Academy, an interdenominational Christian school committed to a higher education. The program is set up for K-3 through 12th grades and the focus of the student's education is the development of the whole child's mind, body and spirit.

Grace Christian Academy offers a full college-preparatory curriculum, sports, and extra-curricular activities. The student-to-teacher ratio averages 12-to-1 and the academy is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission. It is also a member of the Decatur County Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Georgia Youth Science & technology Center (GYSTC).
