Southern Hospitality Sums Up the Culture of Bainbridge Georgia

A small town atmosphere oozing with Southern hospitality would be a great way to describe the cultural setting of Bainbridge, Georgia. If you are looking for a home for your family in Bainbridge or Lake Seminole areas, contact Larry Lennard. Larry can put his more than 15 years experience in the Bainbridge and Lake Seminole areas to work for you in finding the right home

Willis Park is the cultural center of Bainbridge. The park is a gorgeously maintained garden-style park complete with a Victorian style gazebo and fountain. There are monuments scattered throughout the park that trace the Georgian history back for hundreds of years.

The park remains beautiful all year long, but is at its best when the flowers are in full bloom and the community becomes abuzz with all kinds of various events. There are lots of shade trees in the park and live goldfish in the Victorian fountain.

Performance and Arts

The historic Troupe Street Theater is the showpiece of downtown Bainbridge and the home of the Bainbridge Little Theatre. The theater is locally owned and operated and puts on many performances during the year. It has been in operation for over 30 years!

The old Firehouse building was once home to City Hall and Public Safety but now is the home of the Firehouse Center and Gallery that features exhibits, concerts, meetings, lectures and other various community events.

Annual Historic Tour

The Annual Historic Tour is a tribute to the county's heritage and was developed by the Bainbridge Historical Society in 1989. The tour highlights homes and other structures in Bainbridge's historic district.

The Heritage Tour is a driving tour of homes, churches and chapels, and other historical buildings and locations. The tour is made up of over 50 locations, many of which are over a century old. It is designed to enrich and educate people about the deep, rich history that has helped Bainbridge what it is today.

Some of the sites included in the tour are as follows:

  • The Graves-Harrell House - This home, built in the 1880's, was constructed by James R. Graves, an express agent who brought the first ice to Bainbridge in bags of sawdust.
  • Troupe Street Theatre - This was the original site of the Bainbridge Pepsi Cola Bottling Company.
  • Camp Recovery - Founded in 1871 and used to treat soldiers with malaria during the Indian Wars.
  • The Callahan-Penhallegon House - On the National Register of Historic Places, this house was built by John W. Callahan, owner of a fleet of steamboats.
  • The Perry-Penela House - Established in 1897, this home featured the first indoor toilet in Bainbridge.
  • First Presbyterian Church - This church includes communion ware and a pulpit Bible that was rescued from the 1852 Presbyterian Church that burned in the late 1800's. The pews and stained glass are original and the church organ is a replica of the 1903 organ that was in the church.
  • The Ehrlich-Immendorf House - Constructed in 1898, this home contains mantels and doors that were saved when the first home built on the lot burned. The dining room is large enough to seat fifty people.
  • The Harrell-Gragg-Livingston Home - Built by Mart Harrell in 1906, this house was the first home in Bainbridge to be built with concrete building blocks. The concrete blocks were made by local express agent, Mr. Harrellin, his back yard.
