Bainbridge Community

The Bainbridge Georgia Community Has Deep Southern Roots

The Bainbridge Georgia community takes pride in the fact that they have built a strong community that is known for a generous heart and Southern Hospitality. The slogan "Georgia at its Best" sums up the beautiful countryside, the fabulous people and the fantastic year-round weather that make up our communities. When you look at the current Bainbridge profile you come to realize that today’s community has strong ties with the Old South.

A strong community doesn’t just happen to occur spontaneously overnight. Bainbridge roots reach back to the Old South and community members have actively planned and built the community to where it is today by taking advantage of strengths and fortifying areas of weakness.

History

The earliest history traced to the Bainbridge area is the time of the Seminole Indians, who thrived on the bluffs along the Flint River. The Seminoles believed very strongly that the people’s souls were merged with the soul of the land…that who they were was a big part of where they were.

The people who live in the Bainbridge area today, feel the same way as the people who lived here long ago. The fabulous geography is a major part of who they are.

Generations of Southerners from Bainbridge have witnessed the evolution of the superlative landscape. The history of the area is rich with Indian history, battle stories, and monuments that honor changes that have occurred during the past centuries.

The city of Bainbridge was incorporate in 1829 and has grown constantly since its inception. Decatur County was first formed in 1823 and named after Commodore Stephen Decatur who was a naval hero during the War of 1812.

Before that, the present site that now houses Bainbridge residents was an Indian Village known as Pucknawhitla. After that it became know as Burgess Town when a local trapper established a trading post there. It later became Fort Hughes and in 1824 was named Bainbridge in honor of Commodore Bainbridge, Commander of "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812.
